India’s newest green-field gateway, Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), entered the global aviation map at 02:55 a.m. IST on 15 July when Air India Express flight IX207 departed for Abu Dhabi. The take-off came seven months after NMIA began domestic services and caps two decades of planning to de-congest Mumbai’s saturated Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The inaugural service will operate twice weekly (Wednesday and Friday), scaling to three flights from 29 July. Flying time to the UAE capital is roughly 2 hours 30 minutes, with launch fares starting at ₹12,671 ex-India. By providing a second international gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, NMIA is expected to siphon off at least 10 % of traffic from the main airport in its first year, easing slot pressure for other carriers and opening room for additional long-haul frequencies. For business travellers the new route trims surface transfer time for companies based in Navi Mumbai, Pune and the industrial belts along the Mumbai–Pune Expressway by up to 90 minutes. Logistics firms say shorter landside legs could cut end-to-end transit for high-value cargo shipments by a full day, important for India’s growing pharmaceutical exports to the Gulf. Real-estate analysts anticipate an uplift in commercial leasing around the airport and adjoining Dronagiri SEZ as connectivity improves. The government of Maharashtra has offered a 50 % reduction in state jet-fuel tax at NMIA for the first three years to lure more foreign carriers. Singapore Airlines, Etihad and Qatar Airways are reportedly evaluating services once Terminal 1’s capacity ramps up to 20 million passengers annually in 2027. Ground transportation links will be further enhanced when the under-construction Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link and the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 open later this year. Travellers should note that NMIA currently supports e-visas on arrival only for eligible nationals; passengers requiring a paper visa must still clear immigration at departure points. Corporate travel managers are advised to update employee profiles and preferred airport fields in self-booking tools to reflect the new option.
