Brazil’s largest low-cost carrier, GOL Linhas Aéreas, inaugurated its first long-haul international route on 17 July 2026, linking Rio de Janeiro/Galeão (GIG) with New York–JFK three times per week on Airbus A330 aircraft. The launch makes GOL the only Brazilian airline offering a direct connection between the country’s tourism capital and the busiest corporate gateway in the United States. Although foreign carriers already connect the two cities, the presence of a home-grown airline sharply increases seat capacity and gives Brazilian corporates access to local-language sales, a fully Brazilian frequent-flyer programme and seamless domestic feed across GOL’s 75-airport network. CEO Celso Ferrer said the service is “an invitation for travellers to experience Brazil from the moment they board,” underscoring the airline’s ambition to court inbound meetings-and-events traffic ahead of Brazil’s 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Corporate buyers will benefit from GOL’s broad codeshare partnerships with American Airlines, Air France-KLM and sister carrier Avianca. Travellers originating in Boston, Chicago or Dallas can now through-ticket on a single PNR, earn AAdvantage miles and avoid the São Paulo connection previously required for most Brazil itineraries. Travel-management companies estimate door-to-door journey times on key oil-and-gas routes (Houston/IAH via AA codeshare) will fall by up to three hours. From a mobility-policy standpoint, the new service supports the Brazilian government’s goal of doubling inbound foreign direct investment to the state of Rio by 2030. According to the Ministry of Ports and Airports, every daily long-haul frequency generates about 800 direct and indirect jobs in ground handling, catering and tourism services. Practical tip: passengers connecting onward in Brazil should allow at least 90 minutes at GIG for domestic re-check and SEF immigration formalities; trusted-traveller e-gates remain available only at São Paulo-Guarulhos (GRU) for now.
