Brazil Welcomes 5.26 Million Foreign Visitors in First Half of 2026, Signalling Tourism Rebound
Brazil’s inbound tourism has roared back to near-pre-pandemic levels, with 5.26 million international arrivals recorded between January and June 2026, according to figures released on 15 July by Embratur, the Ministry of Tourism and the Federal Police. The performance is the second-best ever for the first six months of a year and represents a 13.3 % jump over 2025. Air travel accounted for 67 % of entries—more than 3.5 million passengers—underscoring the role of Brazil’s revitalised route network and aggressive seat-capacity growth by LATAM, Azul and Gol. Argentina remained the top source market with 1.98 million visitors, followed by Chile (472 k), the United States (396 k), Uruguay (323 k) and Paraguay (304 k). Notably, China, Canada and Australia posted record June numbers, suggesting diversified demand beyond South America. The surge bolsters Brazil’s goal of reaching 10 million annual visitors by 2027 and has immediate implications for corporate mobility. Hotels in São Paulo and Rio report weekday occupancy above 75 %, tightening room availability for business travellers. Airports in São Paulo (GRU) and Rio (GIG) have reinstated fast-track immigration lanes to cope with peak-hour congestion, while the government is fast-tracking e-visa platform upgrades to handle volume from the United States and Australia once those nationals again require visas from 2027. For companies relocating staff or organising meetings, experts recommend booking flights at least six weeks out and securing hotel blocks early—particularly around major events such as Rock in Rio and the B20 Summit in November. Multinationals with regional headquarters in Brazil should also review corporate immigration pipelines, as higher tourist traffic can extend Federal Police appointment lead times for residence-permit registration. Looking ahead, Embratur plans targeted marketing campaigns in North America and Asia and is lobbying Congress for tax incentives that would encourage low-cost carriers to open new long-haul services to Brasília and Recife—moves that could further reshape corporate travel patterns in 2027 and beyond.
