Alberta and British Columbia Issue 1,453 Provincial Invitations in 48 Hours

Western Canada kept the immigration spotlight this week as Alberta and British Columbia released four Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) results between July 14 and July 16. Combined, the provinces invited 1,453 skilled workers and international graduates to apply for nomination—a fast-track to permanent residence worth an extra 600 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points under Express Entry. British Columbia led off on July 16 with two draws under its year-old “Innovate: High Economic Impact” category. A wage-based selection issued 223 invitations to candidates earning at least $58 per hour ($115,000 annually) in NOC TEER 0–3 occupations. A second, points-based round invited 346 registrants with a minimum score of 132—the lowest Innovate cut-off since the stream debuted in April. The lower wage floor and points threshold signal BC’s intent to widen access as it works through a 5,254-slot federal allocation that is 31 percent larger than last year. Alberta followed with two draws dated July 14–15. The larger Alberta Opportunity Stream invited 833 foreign workers already employed on valid permits, selecting profiles with Expression-of-Interest scores as low as 53—a historic low for 2026. A smaller draw targeted the Dedicated Health Care Pathway, sending 51 invitations to physicians, nurses and allied professionals at a score of 52. Alberta has 6,403 nomination spaces for 2026 and continues to run some of the country’s most frequent health-sector draws to ease chronic staffing gaps. Why it matters: Ottawa’s 2026-2028 levels plan raises total PNP admissions to 91,500 this year, up from 55,000 in 2025. As provinces race to use bigger allocations, draw frequency and size have increased, creating fresh options for candidates shut out by rising federal CRS cut-offs. The Alberta and BC results confirm two trends—lower minimums and sector-specific targeting—that observers expect to dominate the second half of 2026. Next steps for invitees are time-sensitive. BC nominees have 30 days to file complete applications and pay the C$1,750 fee; Alberta applicants must meet stream-specific deadlines and prove genuine intent to reside in-province. With additional BC and Alberta rounds likely before August, candidates should keep profiles current, improve language scores where possible, and consider simultaneous registrations in multiple provinces to hedge their chances.
