The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) updated its travel advice for Switzerland on 17 July, warning of significant delays at several crossings between the canton of Geneva and France in the coming days. Swiss authorities plan to close a number of minor border posts and impose spot checks at the remaining ones as they finalise post-summit security dismantling following last month’s G7 meeting in nearby Évian. Although the summit ended on 17 June, police in both countries continue to remove temporary infrastructure and conduct vehicle inspections connected to anti-globalisation protests. From mobility perspective, the closures will primarily affect daily commuters and business travellers who routinely drive or use shuttle services between Geneva, the Pays de Gex technology parks and Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport. Larger freight consignments originating in western Switzerland may also be rerouted via the A40 motorway corridor, lengthening journey times by up to 45 minutes during morning peaks, according to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS). Logistics providers are advising exporters to build in a 24-hour buffer for time-critical deliveries to French distribution centres. Companies with assignees residing in France but working in Geneva’s international-organisation cluster should communicate alternative public-transport options – notably the Léman Express rail network, which remains unaffected – and consider flexible working arrangements until the checks end, expected early next week. Travellers from the UK transiting through Geneva Airport are not impacted inside the terminal but should factor the road delays into airport transfers.
