Swiss Customs Block Van Carrying 40 Unregistered Bee Colonies at German Border
Swiss border officers in Tägerwilen (canton Thurgau) have intercepted a delivery van transporting 40 live bee colonies without the mandatory import licence. The vehicle, driven by a 40-year-old Polish national and bearing Swiss number plates, was stopped on 5 July; details were released on 17 July after an internal investigation. Under Switzerland’s animal-health regulations, live bees are classified as ‘risk goods’. Importers must notify the cantonal veterinary office in advance and present a veterinary certificate at the frontier. In this incident, many hives were packed only in wooden boxes and several thousand bees were reportedly flying loose in the cargo hold—an obvious biosecurity breach. Customs levied an on-the-spot fine of “several hundred francs” and denied entry; the colonies were sent back to Germany under escort. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) says interceptions of undeclared live animals have risen by 12 % this year, driven by cross-border e-commerce and informal trade among hobbyists. Unauthorised bee imports carry particular risk because of varroa mites and other pathogens that can devastate native Swiss apiaries. For companies moving biological samples, pharmaceuticals or even palletised livestock feed, the case is a reminder that Swiss customs enforce veterinary and phytosanitary laws as strictly as tariff rules. Logistics providers should ensure drivers carry original health documents and pre-clear consignments through the "Passar" e-decl system, which is gradually replacing the legacy e-dec platform. With pollinator health already a sensitive political topic—several cantons subsidise local beekeepers—FOCBS is expected to tighten random checks on vehicles entering from EU states. Mobility managers moving staff or goods across the German-Swiss border should therefore anticipate longer inspections at smaller crossings such as Tägerwilen and adjust delivery schedules accordingly.
