UK issues fresh travel advisory for Italy as wildfire risk rises
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) refreshed its travel advice for Italy on 17 July 2026, flagging a “high risk of wildfires” amid record temperatures sweeping southern Europe. While the overall advisory level (Level 1 – normal precautions) remains unchanged, the FCDO added a dedicated warning under its ‘Warnings and insurance’ section and urged travellers to monitor local media, respect civil-protection orders and confirm onward transport if fires disrupt roads or rail lines. Italy’s Civil Protection Department has already placed parts of Sardinia, Sicily, Calabria and Apulia on orange or red alert for heat and fire through the coming weekend. Last summer wildfires forced mass evacuations in the Peloponnese and on Sicily’s north-eastern coast, leading several insurers to tighten trip-cancellation clauses. Airlines operating to Catania, Palermo and Olbia say they are activating waiver policies that allow ticket changes if airports close because of smoke. For companies managing short-term assignments and rotational crews, the update is a reminder to check duty-of-care protocols. Employees should have access to real-time emergency numbers (112 in Europe) and employers should capture mobile itineraries so evacuation assistance can be triggered quickly. HR teams should also verify whether corporate travel insurance treats wildfire-related delays as a “natural catastrophe,” which can affect reimbursement eligibility. The advisory comes at the height of Italy’s tourist season and follows similar notices from Canada and Australia. Mobility planners should note that local authorities may impose ad-hoc bans on hiking, barbecues and vehicle access to forested areas; violations carry fines up to €10,000. Those relocating with pets should keep vaccination and microchip documents ready, as temporary shelters set up during fire events often require proof of ownership and health status. Although the new guidance targets UK nationals, the operational recommendations—stay hydrated, avoid peak-heat hours, download the IT-Alert civil-protection app—apply to all foreign travellers. Firms with large expatriate populations in Rome, Milan or Naples may wish to circulate the link to the updated advisory and translate key points into Italian for local hires.
