Bushfires NT issued an ‘Advice’-level alert early on 18 July for a fast-moving grass fire near Chibnall Road, Acacia Hills—45 km south of Darwin. The blaze, classified as ‘Going’, is affecting visibility on the Stuart Highway, the main overland route linking Darwin with Katherine and Alice Springs. While domestic rather than international, the corridor is a critical freight artery for perishable goods flown into Darwin and trucked south. Several logistics providers, including Toll and Linfox, have activated contingency plans, rerouting overnight line-haul via the Arnhem Highway where possible. The bushfire comes at the start of the tourist dry-season peak, when camper-vans and 4×4 convoys head to Kakadu and Litchfield national parks. Tourism NT has advised self-drive visitors to allow extra time and to monitor authorities’ social-media channels. Darwin International Airport remains unaffected, but travel-risk consultants emphasise the importance of multi-modal contingency planning: in 2023 a similar blaze forced the temporary closure of the airport fuel farm, disrupting jet-refuelling operations. Employers with fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) staff should brief travellers on alternative coach-transfer routes and ensure that accommodation providers south of Acacia Hills have updated emergency-evacuation procedures.
