Portugal eases walk-in visa submissions in Brazil for priority categories starting 20 July

Portugal’s Embassy in Brazil has quietly overhauled its appointment system, making it significantly easier for Brazilian residents who fall into certain **priority categories** to lodge long-stay visa applications. According to a notice published on the VFS Global website, from 20 July 2026 students accepted to Portuguese higher-education programmes, close family members of Portuguese/EU citizens who live in Portugal and applicants for family-reunification visas (article 64 of Portugal’s immigration law) may present their documents at any of the ten Portuguese Visa Application Centres (VACs) in Brazil **without a prior appointment**. The change is meant to unclog the heavily booked appointment calendar that has frustrated would-be students and family members for months. Until now, securing a slot often meant refreshing the VFS portal at odd hours or paying unregulated “facilitators” who snapped up appointments in seconds. By allowing walk-ins, the embassy hopes to reduce the black market for slots and shorten overall processing times before the September university intake. In practical terms, priority applicants should arrive early, with a complete file, because each VAC will still operate a daily capacity cap. All other visa types—including job-seeker, entrepreneur and digital-nomad categories—continue to require an online appointment. VFS stresses that files missing key documents will be turned away, so applicants should use the step-by-step video guides released alongside the announcement. For multinational HR teams the walk-in policy removes a major friction point in seconding staff to Portugal on dependent or student pathways. Companies that sponsor executive MBAs or relocate EU-national staff with non-EU spouses can now build far more predictable mobility timelines. Travel managers should still reserve extra time for biometric capture and, if necessary, courier return of passports; however, the infamous six-to-eight-week wait just to secure an appointment may effectively disappear for the covered categories. Whether the pilot will be extended to work and entrepreneur visas will depend on queue metrics tracked over the next quarter. For now, the embassy advises non-priority applicants to keep using the appointment system and warns that turning up without a slot will result in denial of entry to the VAC.
