AEMET Issues Third Heatwave Alert of the Summer, Warns Travellers of 44-45 °C Highs
Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET has activated an orange alert for a new heatwave set to grip large parts of the peninsula from Tuesday 21 July through Thursday 23 July, with peak temperatures of up to 45 °C expected in the Guadalquivir Valley, Ebro Basin and interior Mallorca. Transport operators are bracing for weather-related disruptions. Adif has ordered speed restrictions on sections of high-speed track where rail expands beyond tolerance, while several regional bus concessions plan to adjust timetables to avoid operating during the hottest mid-afternoon window. Airlines operating out of Seville and Zaragoza have issued travel advisories warning of possible weight-restriction delays on fully booked flights. Past heatwaves have triggered asphalt softening on the A-4 motorway and rolling blackouts that affected airport terminal cooling systems. Facility managers at Madrid-Barajas say additional backup generators are now fuelled and mobile water stations have been installed at immigration queues in anticipation of longer processing times under high temperatures. Corporate mobility teams should remind travelling staff to hydrate, use sun protection and build contingency time into itineraries for potential rail slow-downs or flight delays. Employers with outdoor assignees in construction or agriculture should verify that regional “heat-stop” labour protocols are ready to deploy.
