ETIAS countdown: advisory site updated on 22 July confirms €20 fee and Q4 2026 go-live for visa-exempt travellers to Finland

The travel-information portal EuropeVisaCheck pushed a 22 July 2026 update that finalises key parameters for the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) as it applies to Finland. According to the advisory, citizens of 59 visa-exempt countries—including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia—will need an approved ETIAS before boarding transport to Finland or any other Schengen state once the system goes live in the fourth quarter of 2026. The fee is confirmed at €20, payable online by credit card or Apple Pay. Most applications are expected to be cleared within minutes, but the Finnish Border Guard cautions that around 3 % could be routed to manual review, extending processing to up to four weeks. Travellers with prior Schengen overstays, unresolved asylum requests or certain criminal convictions are most at risk of referrals. For Finnish-based multinationals, ETIAS introduces a new compliance layer for frequent flyers on short-term assignments. HR teams should budget time and train staff to obtain authorisations well before the autumn roll-out—especially for last-minute sales trips that currently rely on visa-free entry. Airlines operating to Helsinki will be fined €5 000 per passenger carried without a valid ETIAS code once enforcement starts. Importantly, ETIAS is linked to the Entry/Exit System, meaning overstays logged by Finnish border authorities will automatically invalidate future travel authorisations. Immigration advisers recommend maintaining meticulous records of in- and out-stamps—or their electronic equivalents—because appeals must be filed in the member state that issued the denial. In Finland’s case, that will be the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri). Finavia says it has completed integration tests of the ETIAS carrier interface at Helsinki, Tampere and Turku airports. QR-code verification lanes will be sign-posted in blue and staffed by bilingual agents during the first three months of operation to ease passenger flow.
