FrontalieriTicino, the information portal for frontier workers, has rolled out a major upgrade to its real-time border-wait dashboard. Launched on 22 July 2026, the new map aggregates live traffic flows from 26 road crossings between Italy and Switzerland, refreshing every 15 minutes during peak commuter windows. The platform pulls TomTom congestion data, webcam snapshots from ASTRA and Polizia Cantonale Ticino and customs queue sensors to deliver colour-coded wait-time estimates. Users can filter by crossing, direction and vehicle type, while employers can download CSV feeds to integrate into internal mobility apps. Why it matters: on a normal weekday more than 70,000 motorists cross from Lombardy into Ticino between 06:00 and 09:00. Even minor incidents can snowball into hour-long delays, jeopardising punctuality and disrupting just-in-time production lines. With the telework quota now capped at 25 %, companies once again need granular visibility over physical commutes. Customs authorities have welcomed the initiative, noting that transparent data can help distribute traffic away from the most congested posts such as Stabio 2 and Ponte Chiasso. In the medium term Switzerland’s Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) plans to feed the same data into its official Via-Suisse app, but for now FrontalieriTicino offers the only consolidated view. Practical tip: HR teams can push the widget to employees’ phones and use the export file to trigger ‘leave-home-earlier’ SMS alerts when congestion exceeds predefined thresholds.
