Cathay Pacific to move Chengdu flights back to Shuangliu on 31 July
With renovation works at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) complete, Cathay Pacific has announced that all scheduled passenger flights between Hong Kong and Chengdu will relocate from Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) to CTU starting 31 July 2026. Travellers will check in at Terminal 1 in Shuangliu, with counters opening three hours before departure and closing 60 minutes prior. The move restores the carrier’s traditional CTU base, which offers better ground-transport links into Chengdu’s city centre. For mobility planners the change reduces travel time from airport to downtown hotels by up to 45 minutes compared with Tianfu, cutting ground-transfer costs for short-stay business travellers. Cathay said ticketed customers whose travel date falls on or after 31 July have been automatically re-routed to the new airport code. Corporate travel managers should update booking tools and ensure employee profiles reflect the CTU station to avoid disruption in duty-of-care tracking systems. Travellers transiting in Hong Kong must still clear security screening; no through-check of cabin baggage is permitted under Hong Kong aviation rules. The relocation follows Hong Kong Airlines’ own decision to switch its Chengdu services to Shuangliu (see separate story) and signifies growing confidence in business traffic between Hong Kong and western China’s biggest commercial hub. Chengdu is home to more than 400 Fortune-500 investment projects and is a key node in many GBA companies’ China strategies. Passengers connecting beyond Chengdu will regain access to the extensive domestic network operated from CTU, including high-frequency flights to Chongqing, Xi’an and Urumqi. Travel suppliers should therefore expect increased demand for multi-segment itineraries that combine Hong Kong’s international reach with Chengdu’s inland connectivity.
