Cathay Pacific has shelved plans to restart its daily Hong Kong–Dubai passenger service and four-times-weekly Hong Kong–Riyadh flights, pushing the relaunch from 1 September to 25–26 October. The airline cited “the latest developments in the Middle East” after a week of tit-for-tat strikes between U.S. forces and Iranian-backed militias that rattled Gulf air corridors. The decision, announced late on 17 July, also postpones the re-entry of Cathay freighter services to Riyadh, originally earmarked for 1 August. Passengers holding September tickets are being offered free refunds, re-routing via partner carriers, or rebooking once services resume. Corporate-travel managers with project teams in Saudi Arabia and the UAE should review contingency routings via Doha, Abu Dhabi or Singapore, where capacity is currently stable. Middle Eastern traffic was one of Cathay’s last long-haul segments yet to be restored to pre-pandemic levels. The postponement underscores how geopolitical flashpoints can undermine Hong Kong’s hub-recovery narrative just as the airport reclaims 80 percent of its 2019 passenger numbers. Aviation analysts estimate the delay will defer roughly 25,000 inbound seats and 2,000 tonnes of high-yield cargo capacity during the lucrative autumn window. Cathay said it would “continue to closely monitor the evolving situation” and remained committed to expanding its network once safety and commercial conditions stabilise. The Hong Kong government, which owns 53 percent of Cathay’s voting shares via a pandemic-era rescue package, has been briefed on the risk assessment process but did not instruct the carrier to withdraw. For Hong Kong-based expatriates and regional headquarters relying on same-day Middle East connections, the episode is a reminder to build flexibility into mobility policies—maintaining multi-carrier contracts, extended ticket validity and virtual-assignment options—until geopolitical risk premiums ease.
