UK updates UAE travel advice amid heightened regional tensions
The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a same-day update to its travel advice for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), dated 24 July 2026. The revision reflects a deteriorating security picture across the Gulf following a fortnight of US-Iran strikes that have prompted intermittent air-space closures and a spike in airline reroutings. In its notice, the FCDO warns that further drone or missile activity “cannot be ruled out” and urges British nationals to keep exit plans under review, monitor local media, and register for FCDO email alerts. Although UAE airports remain operational, the advisory highlights the possibility of short-notice flight cancellations and diversions—an issue already confronting corporate travel managers moving staff through Dubai and Abu Dhabi hubs. The update will be closely watched by multinational companies running regional headquarters or project teams in the UAE. Under most duty-of-care frameworks, an elevated travel-risk rating triggers the need for updated risk assessments, revised evacuation protocols and—importantly—employee consent for travel. Travel managers should therefore brief assignees on contingency routings (e.g., via Muscat or Riyadh) and remind them to register with the employer’s traveller-tracking platform. For mobility programmes, the main practical implication is the potential for cost overruns related to last-minute re-ticketing or extended hotel stays. HR teams should also refresh crisis-communications trees to cover dependants and visiting relatives who may be transiting the UAE during the busy summer travel window.
