Dubai Airports, in partnership with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), unveiled a ‘Smart Gates Pre-Eligibility Verification’ service on 24 July. The tool—accessible via QR codes in terminal areas and through the Pocket Flights platform—allows passengers to confirm within seconds whether their passport and visa class qualify them to use DXB’s automated e-gates before they reach immigration. Smart Gates currently process up to 240,000 passengers a day and can clear eligible travellers in under 15 seconds, but confusion over eligibility has created bottlenecks as flyers queue only to be turned away. By giving clarity earlier in the journey, Dubai Airports expects to shave crucial minutes off connection times, a boon for the 40 % of DXB passengers who transit onward. The move forms part of a broader digital-border strategy that includes biometric boarding trials with Emirates and a planned single-token corridor between DXB and Bahrain International Airport. For multinational firms routing assignees through Dubai, the predictable processing time improves the reliability of tight business itineraries and reduces the likelihood of missed meetings. Travel managers should update pre-trip briefings to include the QR-code check and remind travellers that Smart Gates generally accept UAE residents, GCC nationals, and eGate-registered passport holders from more than 80 countries, provided passports are valid for at least six months. Those carrying emergency passports, recently renewed residence visas or children under 15 will still need to queue at manned counters.
