Finnish MFA refreshes travel advisories for Croatia and Malta ahead of peak holiday season
With Nordic summer holidays in full swing, Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs issued updated travel advisories for Croatia and Malta on 24 July 2026. Both destinations retain the lowest "exercise normal caution" rating, but the MFA has added expanded guidance on road safety, healthcare access and emergency documentation services. For Croatia, the advisory underscores the importance of carrying an EU digital ID or passport when moving between Schengen and non-Schengen zones within the country, as well as noting seasonal traffic congestion on the A1 motorway to Dalmatia. Finnish tourists driving rental cars are reminded that roadside assistance can be scarce in remote national-park areas and that Croatia’s electronic toll system accepts only certain international cards. The Malta notice reiterates that the island nation lacks a Finnish embassy capable of issuing full-validity passports; in emergencies Finns must obtain an EU Emergency Travel Document or contact the Finnish Embassy in Rome. It also flags left-hand traffic and a rise in petty theft in crowded nightlife districts in Paceville. Although the security levels remain unchanged, the updates are significant for employers sending staff on short-term projects or incentive trips. Corporate travel managers should ensure that employees have comprehensive insurance and that copies of ID documents are stored separately, as recommended by the MFA. The advisories come amid a surge in outbound leisure travel: Finavia reported record passenger volumes at Helsinki Airport in June. By refreshing guidance, the MFA aims to head off consular emergencies that can strain limited embassy resources during peak season.
