Vienna International Airport (VIE) has notified airlines, ground handlers and the travelling public that its southern runway 16/34 will be taken out of service from 21:00 local time on Sunday, 26 July 2026 until approximately 07:00 on Monday, 27 July. The closure, announced through the airport’s stakeholder platform Dialogforum Flughafen Wien, is required for seasonal green-area management and light pavement works. All movements during the eight-hour window will be routed to the airport’s remaining runway system. Airport operations managers stress that the shutdown has been scheduled overnight to minimise passenger disruption during the peak summer holiday period. Nevertheless, carriers with late-evening arrivals and early-morning departures—particularly Austrian Airlines, Ryanair and Wizz Air—have been instructed to build in additional taxi time and anticipate atypical runway assignments. The airport expects no breach of Vienna’s night-flight curfew, but contingency slots have been requested from Austro Control in case of adverse winds or unplanned delays. For corporate travel planners the key implication is a potential reshuffling of slots for red-eye flights to major European hubs such as Frankfurt, London-Heathrow and Paris-CDG. Travel managers should monitor carrier notifications and alert employees to possible schedule adjustments or gate changes. Travellers connecting onto long-haul departures in the early hours of 27 July should leave extra time for transfers, as some bussing to remote stands is likely while the single-runway configuration is in effect. Runway maintenance is a regular summer feature at Vienna, whose dual-runway system handled a record 44 million passengers in calendar-year 2025. Keeping to an overnight timetable allows the airport to avoid more disruptive daytime works that could ripple through tightly banked wave structures used by Star Alliance carriers. Looking ahead, Vienna Airport plans a similar overnight closure of runway 11/29 in late August as part of its pre-winter resurfacing programme. Although the impact on most passengers will be limited, aviation insurers note that any single-runway operation carries heightened operational risk, particularly if thunderstorms develop. Companies with critical traveller movements overnight on 26/27 July are advised to activate their journey-management protocols and ensure that traveller tracking data are up to date in the event of diversions to Bratislava or Linz.
