Vienna’s orange U3 line—one of the city’s busiest east-west public-transport corridors—will be split in two for seven weeks while Wiener Linien replaces a critical set of track switches between Westbahnhof and Johnstraße. The shutdown starts at 04:00 on Monday, 13 July 2026, and runs until 04:00 on Monday, 31 August 2026, coinciding with the period of lowest ridership during the summer holidays. During the works, U3 trains will operate only on the sections Ottakring ↔ Hütteldorfer Straße (western shuttle) and Westbahnhof ↔ Simmering (eastern shuttle); the intermediate stations Johnstraße and Schweglerstraße will be closed. To keep the city moving, Wiener Linien is rolling out a broad surface network. A temporary ‘E3’ replacement bus will run every 6–7 minutes linking all closed stations and intersecting tram and bus routes. Passengers are also encouraged to use tram lines 46 and 49, bus 48A and the S-Bahn S45 as parallel alternatives. Journey-planning functions in the WienMobil app already reflect the changes, and real-time information will be displayed on platform screens and social-media feeds. Infrastructure experts note that the switch complex near Westbahnhof handles more than 450 train movements per peak hour; decades of heavy traffic have led to metal fatigue and a rising fault rate. Replacing the entire assembly now—rather than patch-repairing piecemeal—will extend asset life by 25 years and allow higher operating speeds once service resumes, cutting 50–60 seconds from end-to-end run-times. The €7.8 million project is funded from the city’s mobility budget and co-financed through the federal climate-investment programme. For corporates, the works mean longer transfers between Vienna’s western districts, Westbahnhof long-distance hub and the new business clusters in Simmering and Erdberg. Employers with time-critical shift patterns have been advised to stagger start times or offer remote-work flexibility. Travellers heading to Vienna International Airport via Westbahnhof should also factor in an extra 15–20 minutes and consider taking the Railjet from Meidling instead. Once the U3 re-opens on 31 August, Wiener Linien plans a ‘soft start’ with 2–3 weeks of continuous monitoring to fine-tune signalling and ensure the upgraded switches bed in smoothly—a step designed to avoid teething-delay headlines when commuters return from holiday.
