Gordie Howe International Bridge officially opens, creating a new high-capacity gateway between Windsor and Detroit

Passenger traffic also stands to benefit: tourism offices on both sides are already marketing same-day itineraries between Detroit’s cultural attractions and Windsor-Essex wine country. Companies with mobile workforces should update their travel policies to reflect the new routing options. For example, shuttling staff between Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) and offices in Windsor or London now takes as little as 45 minutes door-to-door. Organisations that rely on U.S. E-Visas or Canadian work permits should remind travellers to carry appropriate documentation, as officers at the new ports will be enforcing standard entry checks. Cross-border commuters may wish to apply for NEXUS now; enrolment centres on both sides report appointment availability within two weeks. Finally, the opening comes just weeks before the Detroit/Canada leg of the FIFA World Cup 26 and at the height of summer peak season. HR and global-mobility teams should monitor CBSA and CBP advisories for any temporary event-related restrictions, but officials say the bridge’s extra lanes and technological upgrades should prevent the severe backups seen during past mega-events.
