Hong Kong adds extra high-speed rail services and adjusts ferries as summer travel demand surges

Hong Kong’s Transport Department issued a Special Traffic News bulletin at 11:15 a.m. on 29 July outlining a raft of service changes designed to keep passengers moving during one of the busiest spells on the calendar. The headline item is a package of 28 additional cross-border trains on the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link. Between 25 July and 23 August, extra G-series trains will run on peak Fridays, weekends and public-holiday eves, boosting capacity on the popular Hong Kong West Kowloon–Futian and West Kowloon–Shenzhenbei sectors by roughly 6,000 seats a day. Tickets went on sale immediately through China Railway’s 12306 platform, appointed agents and station ticket offices, giving leisure travellers and cross-border commuters more flexibility at short notice. The same bulletin flagged temporary cancellations on Park Island Transport’s Ma Wan–Central and Ma Wan–Tsuen Wan ferries, with several evening sailings replaced by dedicated NR338S buses because of pier-side maintenance. Bus substitutions preserve connectivity for residents but lengthen door-to-door journeys by 15–20 minutes, so employers with staff living on Ma Wan have been advised to adjust shift patterns where possible. Road users were also warned about a fast-lane closure on Ngau Tau Kok Road for emergency water-main repairs and the suspension of Citybus circular sightseeing routes H3/H4 due to overhanging tree branches on Tung Tau Wan Road. While the measures are localised, they highlight how quickly small infrastructure faults can ripple through Hong Kong’s dense transport web. Finally, MTR Corporation confirmed that East Rail Line frequencies will step up on summer weekends through 30 August, cutting headways to four minutes at the busiest times. The uplift is expected to absorb crowds heading for Mainland shopping trips via Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, as well as families travelling to the Science Park and Sha Tin attractions.
