Macao Updates Vehicle On-Board Clearance Rules and QR-Code Process, Citing 16 September Roll-Out
Macao’s Public Security Police Force has updated its immigration service page to reflect new on-board clearance procedures for passenger vehicles, effective 16 September 2026. According to the government portal, drivers using the Border Gate, Hengqin Port or Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge checkpoints must now scan a personalised QR code generated in the "My Border Crossing" function of the Macao One Account app, while passengers continue to present physical Resident Identity Cards. The page revision is time-stamped "Last modified: 2026-09-16 10:29." The change harmonises vehicle lanes with pedestrian e-Channels, aiming to cut dwell times and reduce document handling. For mainland visitors holding the "Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao" (港澳通行证), no pre-registration is required to use traditional two-gate e-Channels, provided biometric consent was given at application. Transport firms running cross-border shuttle vans say the QR-based process trims each vehicle transaction by 20–30 seconds—a cumulative saving that could ease congestion during Golden Week peaks when daily crossings can top 450,000. The portal also clarifies overstay penalties (MOP 500–800 per day) and reiterates that overstayers face a two-year bar on residence applications after exit interdiction. Mobility advisers should update driver SOPs and ensure QR codes are generated before approaching checkpoints to avoid lane delays. Although the update mainly addresses Macao residents, it indirectly benefits mainland business travellers who rely on chauffeur-driven cars for investor roadshows between Hengqin’s free-trade zone and Macao’s conference hotels.
