Hong Kong’s Immigration Department (ImmD) has rolled out a new mobile application, “Go Hong Kong,” that lets eligible frequent visitors complete e-Channel enrolment on their smartphones before they board a flight. Announced on 16 September 2026, the app uses NFC to read the chip in an electronic passport and combines facial recognition with document scans to verify identity remotely. To qualify, travellers must be 18 or older, hold a biometric passport recognised by ImmD, possess a valid multi-visit visa where necessary, have no adverse record in Hong Kong, and have entered the city at least twice via Hong Kong International Airport in the past 24 months. On approval—usually within hours—the enrolment becomes active the first time the traveller re-enters Hong Kong, giving access to over 650 automated clearance gates across all land, sea and air checkpoints. The innovation is expected to streamline entry for mainland executives who shuttle to Hong Kong for finance and technology projects, as well as for foreign business travellers who route through the city to mainland hubs such as Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Travel-risk advisers say the upgrade could cut average queuing times by 5-10 minutes per passenger during peak periods, translating into faster onward connections on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link. From a data-privacy standpoint, ImmD states that personal information captured by the app is encrypted end-to-end and stored only for the purpose of vetting eligibility. Nevertheless, corporate mobility teams should update GDPR compliance notices for EU-based staff and ensure travellers enable device-level security before performing the NFC scan. Looking ahead, the department hints that the same platform will soon allow digital boarding-card integration and push notifications of real-time checkpoint congestion, further aligning Hong Kong with Singapore’s Smart Gate and Seoul’s SmartPass ecosystems.
