As part of the mitigation package for Vienna’s S-Bahn shutdown, ÖBB-Postbus quietly rolled out two extra Vienna Airport Bus services on 18 September. Route VAB 4 shuttles every 20 minutes between Karlsplatz—within walking distance of major hotels and offices on the Ringstrasse—and Flughafen Wien, while route VAB 5 links the multimodal hub at Praterstern to the airport in just over 25 minutes. Both lines use low-emission Euro VI coaches equipped with Wi-Fi and luggage racks. The new services complement the existing VAB corridors from Westbahnhof, Schwedenplatz and Donauzentrum, giving corporate travellers and tourists five non-stop bus options alongside rail. Introductory one-way fares start at €10.50, and tickets can be loaded into popular mobility wallets such as ÖBB App and WienMobil. ÖBB expects the extra capacity to absorb up to 2,500 passengers per day displaced from the closed Stammstrecke, relieving pressure on the already busy U-Bahn line U1 between Hauptbahnhof and Stephansplatz. Early feedback from passengers on social media points to on-time performance but calls for additional luggage space during peak flight banks. Travel-management companies welcoming incentive groups to Vienna in the autumn convention season should update itinerary templates to reflect the new stop locations. ÖBB says real-time occupancy figures will be published via an open API later this month, enabling integration into corporate mobility dashboards.
