A nationwide information-technology breakdown in Hungary early on 18 September paralysed passport‐control systems at all road border crossings and at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport. According to the Hungarian National Police, the outage began at 06:00 and forced officers to revert to manual checks, creating kilometre-long queues at the main crossings into Austria at Hegyeshalom/Nickelsdorf, Sopron/Klingenbach and Rábafüzes/Heiligenkreuz. Truck drivers reported waits of up to four hours, while passenger cars faced delays averaging 90 minutes. Airlines operating the Vienna–Budapest business shuttle warned customers to arrive at least three hours before departure. Austria’s motorway operator ASFINAG issued congestion warnings for the A4 Ostautobahn and the S31 Burgenland Schnellstraße, and ÖBB diverted some Vienna–Győr rail services to avoid missed onward connections. The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ) urged exporters using just-in-time delivery chains to reroute freight via Slovakia until the fault is rectified. Hungarian authorities said specialist teams from the Interior Ministry and National Infocommunications Service restored most systems by late afternoon, but residual queues persisted into the evening. No cyber-attack is suspected; officials blamed a database synchronisation error during overnight maintenance. For Austrian businesses the incident is a reminder of the fragility of the Western Balkan freight artery. Logistics managers are being advised to review contingency plans and to monitor the police border-wait website and ASFINAG’s live traffic feed. Frequent cross-border commuters should carry refreshments and ensure electronic toll tags are topped up to avoid additional stops. In the medium term, the episode is likely to accelerate bilateral talks on installing common e-gates and shared data platforms at the Austria-Hungary frontier—a project that has so far stalled over cost-sharing questions.
