Northern Cyprus authorities confirmed on 19 September that a joint police task-force detained a 34-year-old third-country national who had been living and working on the island without a valid residence permit. The arrest forms part of a stepped-up campaign that began on 18 September targeting illegal stayers, human-trafficking networks and document fraud. According to the statement, officers carried out checks on 2,122 vehicles, issued 248 traffic citations and removed 24 vehicles from circulation. During those stops they identified the suspect, who admitted that his permit had expired more than a year ago. He now faces deportation and an administrative re-entry ban of up to five years, in line with the Aliens and Immigration Law. Immigration lawyers say the operation is a signal that both the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus and the de facto administration in the north are under pressure to demonstrate tighter border-control ahead of the 2027 Schengen evaluation of the Republic. Overstayers increasingly risk on-the-spot detention rather than a grace period to regularise status. For employers running split-site operations or project work north of the Green Line, the implications are immediate. HR teams should audit expatriate files to ensure residence cards and social-insurance contributions are current and remind posted workers to carry copies of their permits during routine travel between checkpoints. Companies found employing people without valid authorisation face fines of up to €20,000 per worker under amendments passed earlier this year. The Interior Ministry in the south welcomed the enforcement, noting that irregular migration flows through the UN-buffer zone surged 18 % in the first half of 2026.
