Fresh Eurostat figures released on 18 September show that air travel made up 25.3 % of all passenger-kilometres in Cyprus in 2024—the third-highest share among EU member states, behind only Croatia and Bulgaria. The data underline the island nation’s heavy reliance on aviation for both domestic mobility (via international flights) and outbound travel, given the absence of rail links and limited long-distance ferry services. For policy-makers, the numbers are a call to ensure that airport infrastructure keeps pace with demand. Larnaca’s single-runway configuration and Paphos’ seasonal peaks already stretch capacity, and projected growth from tourism, remote-worker visas and a burgeoning conference sector could exacerbate bottlenecks. The Eurostat release is likely to feed into parliamentary debates on whether to fast-track a second runway or expand terminal space at Larnaca. Corporate mobility teams should read the statistics as validation of Cyprus’ status as an air-dependent market: flight availability, slot resilience and contingency planning remain central to assignment success. Airlines may also use the data to justify additional frequencies or the introduction of wide-body aircraft on high-demand routes, potentially improving seat availability for business-class travellers. Sustainability is the other side of the coin. With EU Fit-for-55 regulations ramping up, carriers operating to Cyprus face increasing pressure to blend sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or purchase additional carbon credits—costs that could flow through to corporate travel budgets. Companies with sizeable Cyprus footprints may therefore need to update their carbon accounting and consider multimodal options, such as combining meetings in Athens or Tel Aviv with short-haul hops to Cyprus, to optimise emissions.
