Irish authorities are investigating a suspected people-smuggling operation after six Algerian nationals – five men and a teenage boy – were discovered inside a sealed freight container that arrived at Rosslare Europort in the early hours of 18 September. A distress call made from a mobile phone inside the unit enabled gardaí, port security, ambulance crews and immigration officials to mount a rapid search-and-rescue response. The container had departed Zeebrugge, Belgium on 16 September; investigators believe the migrants were loaded shortly before departure despite an intact security seal on arrival. Three of the group remain in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries caused by dehydration and hypoxia. Two adults have already been issued “refusal-of-leave to land” notices, while the minor has been taken into the care of Tusla, Ireland’s child-protection agency. A Wexford man in his 40s was arrested on 18 September on suspicion of facilitating illegal entry and is being questioned under Section 14 of the Criminal Justice (Smuggling of Persons) Act 2021. Rosslare handles more than half a million trailer movements a year, making clandestine entry difficult to detect. Local councillor and paramedic Ger Carthy noted that legitimate seals can be reapplied once stowaways are inside, highlighting a gap in supply-chain security checks. Gardaí are now liaising with Belgian police and EUROPOL to trace the container’s logistics chain and identify any organised-crime links. For employers running just-in-time supply chains through Rosslare or Dublin Port, the incident is a reminder that carriers may face significant delays while containers are screened and evidence gathered. Companies moving temperature-sensitive or perishable goods should build extra lead-time into shipments this week and monitor updates from Irish Ferries and Stena Line. Immigration advisers also expect closer scrutiny of freight documentation and driver passports over the coming days. Human-rights groups, meanwhile, have renewed calls for safe-and-legal entry routes for asylum seekers to reduce reliance on dangerous clandestine transport.
