Freedom Party slams interior minister, demands ‘asylum stop’ and mass deportations
The right-wing Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) reacted sharply to the government’s upbeat asylum figures on 20 September. Party security spokesman Gernot Darmann dismissed Interior Minister Gerhard Karner’s claim of ‘minus immigration’, saying that 6,500 applications so far this year are “light-years away from zero”. Darmann argued that years of what he calls ‘failed asylum policy’ have eroded public security and created so-called ‘no-go areas’. He reiterated the FPÖ’s core demands: a legal ban on new asylum claims on Austrian soil (“Asylstopp”), the immediate establishment of return centres outside the EU, and an accelerated deportation drive for rejected applicants and foreign offenders. Although the FPÖ currently sits in opposition at federal level, it leads several provincial governments and polls suggest the party could play a king-maker role after the 2027 general election. Its tough rhetoric therefore shapes the political window for future immigration legislation – and fuels public debate about the balance between humanitarian obligations and security concerns. Corporate mobility managers should note that a potential FPÖ role in a future coalition could translate into stricter labour-migration quotas, tighter residence-permit renewal criteria and elevated reputational risk for organisations engaged in refugee integration projects. The statement also indicates that migration will remain a polarising issue in Austrian politics, with business associations likely to push back against blanket restrictions that could aggravate skilled-labour shortages in sectors such as IT, healthcare and engineering.
