The tunnel is a crucial artery for Windsor’s automotive cluster, processing approximately CAD 130 million in parts shipments daily. Companies that rely on just-in-time deliveries have been encouraged to reroute high-value cargo through the Ambassador Bridge or Gordie Howe International Bridge, where additional primary booths have been opened. CBSA officials note that advanced notification of infrastructure work allows carriers to stagger departures and helps travellers—particularly those attending the Detroit Auto Show, which opens September 25—to build buffer time into itineraries. Mobility advisers should flag the advisory to international assignees renting vehicles in Detroit: GPS apps may not reflect lane closures on the Canadian side. Employees enrolled in NEXUS will have access to the dedicated lane when operational, but may still experience slowdowns if regular traffic spills over. Although the construction window is slated to end this week, the agency will reassess on September 20 and could extend the advisory if weather delays resurfacing work.
