The Australian Government has released its monthly Operation Sovereign Borders (OSB) report for the period 1–31 August 2026, published on 25 September. According to the update, Australian authorities “successfully resolved” two maritime ventures attempting to reach Australia unlawfully and returned 11 individuals to their country of origin or departure. The report states that fewer than five unauthorised maritime arrivals (UMAs) were transferred to regional processing countries during the month, while 15 UMAs voluntarily returned home from offshore processing centres. No UMAs were resettled in a third country under existing agreements during the reporting period. The OSB taskforce reiterates that anyone who attempts to travel to Australia by boat without a valid visa “will not settle permanently” in the country. The release serves as a deterrence signal ahead of the northern-monsoon sailing season, when people-smuggling activity traditionally rises.
