Thousands of people are expected to gather on Bern’s Schützenmatte this afternoon for the demonstration “Zwischen uns keine Grenzen!” (No borders between us). The rally, convened by trade-union federation Unia together with Solidarité sans frontières and more than a dozen civil-society organisations, comes one day before Switzerland’s nationwide vote on several popular initiatives and less than a month after the Federal Council advised Parliament to reject the hard-line “Grenzschutzinitiative”. Organisers say the march is intended to highlight what they regard as the growing criminalisation of asylum-seekers and undocumented migrants. Their platform calls for an immediate end to deportations, the closure of detention centres and a pathway to regularise the status of long-term residents without papers. “Freedom of movement is a fundamental right,” Unia secretary Sarah Lutz told reporters, adding that many sectors of the Swiss economy—including construction, hospitality and care—“could not function without migrant labour.” The demonstration also places women’s access to work and education at the centre of integration debates, echoing the Federal Council’s own emphasis on removing gender-specific barriers in its new Integration Programme (KIP 4). Speakers will remind the crowd that 77 % of resident foreigners are economically active, one of the highest rates in the OECD, yet many still face obstacles such as language gaps, credential recognition and precarious residency status. For employers that rely on non-EU/EFTA talent, the protest is a timely reminder that political headwinds can change the compliance landscape quickly. A tougher deportation regime or additional detention capacity could lengthen processing times and raise reputational risks for companies that sponsor permits. Mobility managers are therefore advised to monitor legislative developments as Parliament debates counter-proposals to the Grenzschutzinitiative later this autumn. The Bern police have authorised the march and expect temporary traffic diversions around the city centre from 13:30 to 17:00. Cross-border commuters arriving by rail should factor in possible delays around Bern main station; no border closures are foreseen, but Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) recommends that travellers allow extra time.
