Demand for cross-boundary travel is roaring back, and Hong Kong’s Transport Department (TD) is sounding the alarm. In a traffic notice issued late on 25 September, officials forecast that passenger and vehicle volumes at all land-based boundary control points (BCPs) will spike between 25 and 27 September, with the biggest inbound peak expected on Sunday evening. To reduce wait times, the TD has ordered shuttle-bus operators on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) and franchised “B-route” buses serving Lok Ma Chau and Shenzhen Bay to reserve extra vehicles and crews. Travellers are urged to pre-book coach tickets, avoid peak hours and monitor the Easy Boundary real-time queue-length dashboard. Private-car drivers may face ad-hoc diversions near the Shenzhen Bay Port and could be held in holding areas if congestion worsens. For multinational employers this is the first live stress-test of cross-boundary commuting since work-from-anywhere policies encouraged staff to live on both sides of the border. HR teams should remind employees that immigration counters at Lok Ma Chau close overnight, whereas HZMB operates 24×7. Mobile workers should carry both their Home-Return Permit and Hong Kong ID to speed up automated clearance. The TD also recommends using its HKeMobility app to view CCTV feeds of the HZMB car plazas and to check real-time waiting times for Gold Bus and Yellow Bus shuttles. Companies running just-in-time supply chains into the Greater Bay Area are advised to ship sensitive cargo before Friday evening or risk delays of several hours.
