Private motorists will get a seven-day reprieve on cross-border tolls next week. The Transport Department confirmed on 25 September that from 00:00 on 1 October until 23:59 on 7 October, small passenger vehicles—defined as seven seats or fewer—will pay no RMB 150 toll when using the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Main Bridge. The move aligns Hong Kong with a mainland-wide toll-free policy for passenger cars during major holidays and is expected to boost leisure and family visits to Zhuhai and Macau. Authorities will keep both electronic and manual toll lanes open; drivers using Autotoll or HKeToll tags can continue to cruise through non-stop. For fleet managers the waiver translates into direct savings of nearly HK$160 per round trip, which could be significant for cross-border sales teams clocking multiple journeys during Golden Week. However, traffic volumes are likely to swell. The TD warns that queuing at immigration plazas may lengthen, and special diversions could be imposed without notice if congestion spills back onto the bridge. Companies should therefore book bridge entry slots early under the Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles Scheme and advise staff to allow buffer time in case of inspections by Zhuhai police on the Main Bridge. Drivers should also note that mainland fuel stations along the corridor accept UnionPay or mainland apps only.
