Business travelers across Brazil experienced cascading delays on Saturday, 26 September 2026 after Belo Horizonte’s Tancredo Neves International Airport (CNF/Confins) halted all movements for more than seven hours while engineers repaired a hole in the main runway. The suspension began shortly after 08:00 local time when maintenance crews detected pavement failure near the touchdown zone. BH Airport, the private concessionaire that manages Confins, immediately closed the strip as a safety precaution. By mid-afternoon at least 45 flights had been cancelled and another 60 delayed, leaving long queues at re-booking counters and aircraft stranded on taxiways. The hub, Brazil’s second-busiest for domestic destinations, normally handles around 300 commercial movements every Saturday. Because most of Confins’ traffic connects the economically important mining and automotive centres of Minas Gerais with São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília, the outage quickly rippled through airline networks. Data from FlightStats showed on-time performance for departures nationwide falling below 55 % during the closure. Azul, GOL and LATAM issued waivers allowing passengers to change tickets without penalty; corporate travel managers were advised to monitor itineraries involving Belo Horizonte through the weekend. The National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) reminded carriers of their obligations under Resolution 400 to provide meals, lodging and alternative transport when delays exceed two hours. Although the agency is finalising amendments that will allow reimbursement of passenger expenses instead of immediate assistance, the new rules only take effect on 22 October. Until then, traditional service standards apply, an ANAC spokesperson told Agência Brasil. Operations resumed at 15:08 after an emergency asphalt overlay, but residual delays lasted into the late evening as airlines repositioned equipment and crews. BH Airport has launched an investigation into the root cause of the pavement failure; preliminary reports suggest water infiltration combined with a recent spell of high temperatures. Infrastructure specialists warn that several Brazilian airports built in the 1980s are approaching the end of their design life, and they urge concessionaires to accelerate preventative maintenance to avoid further business-critical disruptions.
