Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism ended the week on a high note after the Central Bank released balance-of-payments data showing that international visitors spent R$ 4.8 billion (about US$ 932 million) in the country during August 2026—a 17 percent jump on the same month last year and the strongest August figure since the time-series began in 2009. Cumulative outlays by foreign travellers between January and August now stand at R$ 38.7 billion (US$ 7.4 billion), already 10 percent ahead of the 2025 record. Tourism minister Gustavo Feliciano attributed the surge to a “perfect storm” of easier air connectivity, major events in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and the first full high-season of Brazil’s digital-nomad visa, launched last year. Industry analysts also point to the steady recovery of business travel: corporate card data compiled by the National Travel Agencies Association shows conference- and project-related trips up 8.2 percent year-to-date. For companies managing global workforces, the numbers matter because they influence hotel rates and airfares during what is shaping up to be a capacity-constrained summer. Domestic carriers have already announced thousands of extra seats to cope with the spike in demand (see separate story on Azul’s Bahia expansion). Mobility teams should lock in accommodation and internal-flight blocks for assignees well in advance and budget for higher per-diems in the main business hubs. Longer term, record visitor receipts strengthen the ministry’s hand in arguing for the renewal—and possible expansion—of the current 90-day visa-waiver regime that covers most EU and South American nationals through September 2029. Officials have hinted that countries delivering high-spending visitor profiles could see their waivers extended beyond that date. The August report also underscores how currency movements feed directly into the mobility cost base. A relatively weak real has made Brazil more affordable for dollar- and euro-based travellers, but any reversal could tighten margins for project budgets that rely on local subcontracting and travel.
