UAE opens formal probe into Flydubai cockpit attack that forced Tel Aviv flight to divert to Saudi Arabia
The UAE Public Prosecution has launched a criminal investigation into the dramatic security incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 on 30 September. The Boeing 737-MAX was operating the evening Dubai–Tel Aviv service when the Omani first officer allegedly stabbed the Indian captain and attempted to crash the aircraft. Cabin crew and passengers over-powered the assailant and the captain managed an emergency descent before the aircraft diverted safely to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. In a statement issued in the early hours of 1 October, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) confirmed that a multidisciplinary UAE team—comprising prosecutors, aviation-security specialists and GCAA investigators—has been dispatched to Tabuk to interview crew, passengers and Saudi counterparts. Israeli and U.S. security agencies have also been invited to join the inquiry because the flight was bound for Tel Aviv and many passengers held Israeli passports. Investigators will examine cockpit-voice and flight-data recorders, aircraft damage (pre-lim reports indicate rudder over-stress) and the copilot’s background, including alleged ideological links flagged by Israeli officials and—according to U.S. President Donald Trump—possible Iranian facilitation. Saudi authorities have meanwhile detained the 34-year-old suspect under anti-terror legislation. For global-mobility managers the case underscores the continuing volatility of Gulf airspace and the importance of robust crew-screening protocols. Companies routing personnel through Dubai or using the busy UAE-Israel corridor should monitor advisories, build itinerary flexibility and review employer-provided kidnapping and crisis-response cover. Flydubai says passengers and crew have been repatriated and counselling services arranged. The airline has suspended the Dubai–Tel Aviv route and is waiving re-booking fees for affected travellers, while Emirates has frozen its Flydubai code-shares on Israel services. A timeline for resumption will depend on the investigation’s findings and the regional security picture.
