Tuesday’s extension leaves Air Canada with no active Middle-East routes and forces travellers onto partner connections via Europe or Asia. The knock-on effects were felt immediately at Dubai International (DXB) and Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International (AUH). Airport departure boards showed a cluster of same-day cancellations and rolling delays across carriers that codeshare or interline with Air Canada, including Emirates and United. Ground handlers said re-routing wide-body capacity at short notice strained gate availability during the morning peak, while some freight forwarders reported outbound cargo left behind because belly-hold allocations were suddenly pulled. For corporate mobility managers the news complicates winter roster planning. Canada–GCC traffic is heavily skewed to energy, infrastructure and education projects, many of which rely on predictable rotation cycles. Employers must now build in additional transit time and factor in higher fares on itineraries that detour through Frankfurt, London or Istanbul. Travel-risk consultants also warn that the prolonged suspension could influence other North-American carriers reviewing their Middle-East exposure. Affected passengers holding Air Canada tickets issued before 24 September can request a full refund or rebook within 30 days of the original travel date, but seat availability on alternative airlines is already tightening around Christmas and the February school holidays. Mobility advisers recommend locking in replacement flights quickly, monitoring GCAA NOTAMs for further airspace changes, and reminding staff to update UAE entry visas if new routings alter arrival dates. In the broader context, Dubai’s reputation for resilience will again be tested. While DXB handled 57 million passengers in the first eight months of 2026, sustained reductions from high-yield North-American markets could dent premium-class revenues. The emirate is likely to accelerate talks with WestJet, Porter and other Canadian operators to fill the gap, but any launch would require bilateral approval and long-range aircraft that are in short supply worldwide.
