Czech Consulate in Hong Kong Closes; Visa and Consular Services Shift to Beijing
Effective 30 September 2026, the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Hong Kong has ceased operations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in an English-language notice. All consular and visa matters for Hong Kong and Macao are now handled by the Czech Embassy in Beijing. The closure means that Czech visa applicants—including business travellers seeking Schengen short-stay visas—must submit biometrics and collect documents in the Chinese capital, some 2,000 km from Hong Kong. Regular postal or courier submission is not permitted under current Schengen rules, so physical attendance remains mandatory. The Beijing embassy has signalled it will add two weekly appointment blocks to absorb the extra demand but warned of longer lead times in the fourth quarter. For Czech citizens resident in Hong Kong, emergency travel documents can be issued by the German Consulate under the existing EU consular co-operation scheme, but routine services such as passport renewals and civil-status certificates also move to Beijing. The Foreign Ministry recommends registering in its DROZD traveller database to receive updated instructions. Employers relocating staff to or from Hong Kong should revise mobility timelines: visa processing is expected to lengthen from an average of 7 to 15 calendar days, excluding travel to Beijing. Companies may wish to budget for overnight accommodation and high-speed rail or flight tickets, as well as factor in China’s 144-hour visa-free transit policy for some nationalities if employees do not hold Chinese visas. The move follows a strategic review of the Czech diplomatic network aimed at reallocating resources to South-East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. No Czech replacement mission in Hong Kong is envisaged in the medium term, making the Beijing embassy the single point of service for Southern China and the Special Administrative Regions.
