Brussels metro, tram and bus network to be ‘heavily disrupted’ by 9 Oct national strike
Urban mobility in the Belgian capital will face significant challenges this Friday as Brussels transport operator STIB–MIVB has warned of "heavily disrupted" service levels on 9 October. The alert, published on 7 October, follows strike notices filed by public-service unions ABVV/FGTB and ACV/CSC as part of a broader protest against federal austerity measures. STIB expects minimal metro frequency, with only one in three trains on core lines 1 and 5 and skeletal shuttle services on orbital routes. Tram and bus operations will depend on volunteer drivers; past nationwide strikes have seen up to 70 % of surface routes cancelled. Real-time occupancy data already shows rising passenger loads as commuters look to travel ahead of the stoppage. The walk-out will coincide with the peak of the autumn conference season in the EU quarter, putting pressure on hotels and taxi fleets. Large employers—including the European Commission and several multinational headquarters—have activated remote-work protocols and are staggering mandatory office days. Event organisers are advising delegates to book bike-share or on-foot alternatives for last-mile connections. From a compliance perspective, businesses must remember that Belgian posted-worker rules require reimbursement of "necessary travel costs" when public transport is unavailable. Mobility managers should also communicate that ticket refunds for unused journeys can be obtained via STIB’s delay-certificate portal. Looking ahead, transport unions hint that further industrial action could hit the network on 12 October, aligning with the wider public-service strike. Companies operating time-critical services in Brussels are therefore building enlarged contingency budgets for taxis and accommodation through next week.
