Christodoulides and von der Leyen discuss final steps toward Schengen entry on MED9 sidelines
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides met European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen on 7 October in Split to review the ‘political roadmap’ for Cyprus’ accession to the Schengen area, government sources confirmed. The bilateral took place on the margins of the MED9 summit and followed the leaders’ plenary endorsement of Cyprus’ bid earlier in the day. According to officials, discussion centred on two outstanding issues: alignment of Cyprus’ police databases with EU-wide biometric systems and the need for unanimous Council approval—something Nicosia hopes to secure under the Polish Presidency in early 2027. Von der Leyen reportedly offered technical assistance to accelerate data-interoperability tests scheduled for December. Christodoulides pitched Schengen entry as a win-win: it would complete the EU’s southern external border and free up airport capacity ahead of the 2027 tourist season, while allowing Cypriot business travellers seamless access to clients across the bloc. Brussels, for its part, wants reassurances that the island can sustain its recent reduction in irregular sea arrivals. Industry reacted positively. Hermes Airports, the operator of Larnaca and Paphos, said it could reconfigure arrival halls for common-travel traffic within three months once the decision is taken. Meanwhile, local chambers of commerce stressed that SMEs will save on courier costs and last-minute visa invitations when partners can enter visa-free. The meeting underlines that, while the technical file is closed, diplomatic capital is still required. Mobility managers should watch for pilot ‘Schengen-light’ measures—such as mutual recognition of entry stamps—possibly rolling out as early as mid-2027.
