The Federal Police Directorate Munich published fresh figures on 8 October 2026 showing 23,064 unauthorised entries intercepted at Bavaria’s land borders since Germany re-introduced temporary Schengen controls in September 2024. Nearly 78 % of the cases occurred on routes from Austria, with the Czech frontier accounting for most of the remainder. Officers also executed over 5,000 outstanding arrest warrants and detained 1,121 suspected smugglers during the same period. The Interior Ministry argues the numbers justify the continued controls, recently prolonged to March 2027. For cross-border commuters and corporate shuttle services—particularly in the Munich–Salzburg and Regensburg–Pilsen corridors—the spot checks translate into journey-time increases of 20-40 minutes during morning peaks. Logistics operators report that just-in-time suppliers in the automotive sector are adjusting delivery windows or re-routing via Switzerland to avoid unpredictability. While EU law permits such internal checks only as a last resort, Berlin says secondary migration pressure and security threats linked to the Russian invasion of Ukraine make the measure proportionate. The European Commission is expected to scrutinise the risk-assessment dossier Germany must submit by November. If Brussels finds the extension disproportionate, financial penalties under the Schengen Borders Code are possible. Business-travel managers should advise staff to carry proof of assignment and allow extra buffer, especially when using fleet vehicles with foreign plates, which police say are more frequently pulled over. Companies that run plant-to-plant shuttles may apply for the Federal Police’s “Registered Frequent Traveller” scheme—still in pilot phase—to access dedicated lanes at Kiefersfelden and Walserberg. The data release also ignites domestic debate: employer federations warn that prolonged controls undermine Germany’s attractiveness as a production hub, whereas Bavaria’s state government wants checks made permanent. A Bundestag hearing has been scheduled for mid-November.
