German Foreign Office warns of long waits at Polish frontier as Warsaw prolongs controls
In an update timestamped 8 October 2026, the Auswärtiges Amt revised its travel advice for Poland to alert motorists and coach operators to “significant constraints” at German–Polish crossings. Poland has extended its own Schengen-internal checks until at least 30 March 2027, citing irregular migration flows via Belarus and Lithuania. Several smaller road crossings remain closed, funnelling traffic through major points such as Świecko/Frankfurt (Oder) and Kołbaskowo/Pasewalk. For German businesses the move especially hits the logistics and e-commerce sectors that rely on same-day deliveries from Polish fulfilment centres into Berlin and Brandenburg. Carriers report queue times of up to two hours during weekend shifts, forcing detours through the Czech Republic or rescheduling nighttime slots. The Federal Association of Road Haulage calls for bilateral Green Lanes for perishable goods similar to those used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Corporate travellers should bookmark Poland’s e-Border app, which shows live waiting times, and carry vehicle ownership papers; Polish border guards have stepped-up random customs inspections targeting VAT carousel fraud. Employers posting staff under the EU Posted Workers Directive must still file electronic ZUS A1 forms—failure may lead to on-the-spot fines heightened to PLN 10,000 under Warsaw’s July amendment. Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt reiterated that Berlin’s own temporary controls with Poland will stay in place “as long as the asymmetric migration challenge persists,” raising fears of a tit-for-tat extension cycle. The European Commission is expected to mediate at the forthcoming Justice and Home Affairs Council on 14 October.
