German Federal Police step up document fraud checks at French land border
The Bundespolizei (Federal Police) confirmed a series of identity-fraud arrests at the Breisach and Kehl crossings on 6–7 October 2026, underscoring Germany’s tougher stance on forged travel documents in the run-up to the full enforcement of the EU Entry/Exit System. In separate incidents, officers detained a Kosovar national wanted under three outstanding warrants and an 18-year-old French resident travelling on a falsified Spanish ID card. Both cases were flagged during routine Schengen-exit queries when biometric anomalies alerted agents to inconsistencies in the EES database. The arrests are part of Operation “Herbstgrenze”, a month-long surge that deploys additional mobile patrols along the Alsace–Baden frontier. Federal Police spokesperson Jana Kiefer stated that the operation “aims to safeguard the integrity of Europe’s new digital border regime and deter facilitators who exploit gaps in cross-border commuter traffic”. For corporate mobility managers, the crackdown has several practical implications. Staff who commute daily from France to German worksites should expect random secondary inspections and should ensure that residence cards or Blue Cards are carried—even on short trips. Logistics firms shuttling technicians between Strasbourg and Freiburg have been advised to build 20–30 minutes of extra buffer time into schedules, especially during morning peaks. Immigration counsel also note that any discrepancy between passport data and HR records—such as outdated married names on work permits—could trigger delays. Companies are encouraged to run a compliance audit of mobile employees’ documents before the peak holiday season begins in late October.
