One week ahead of the redeveloped Huanggang Port’s opening, the Hong Kong government has appealed to residents to use alternative boundary-control points during the facility’s first days of operation. At a 7 October press conference, Transport Department officials said modelling shows vehicle queues could extend 1.5 kilometres on Lok Ma Chau Road at peak hours if travellers flock to the novelty of the new port. To mitigate risk, real-time congestion maps will be pushed to the TD’s “HKeMobility” app and displayed on variable-message signboards on Fanling Highway and Yuen Long Highway. The Shenzhen side will run a parallel information feed through the “Pengcheng Tong” platform. Cross-boundary truckers will also face lane restrictions between 18:00 and 23:00 on opening day to prioritise passenger coaches and authorised taxis. Logistics firms are therefore advised to reroute time-critical shipments via Shenzhen Bay or the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The TD said it will review traffic data daily for two weeks before deciding whether to relax freight restrictions. Mobility managers should brief drivers on contingency routes and monitor app alerts to avoid costly delays.
