CBSA to Shorten Hours at 26 Prairies–Pacific Land Crossings to Sync with U.S. Clock Change
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) quietly announced on 9 October 2026 that 26 land ports of entry in British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba will move to new operating schedules as of 02:00 local time on 1 November 2026. All three provinces now observe permanent daylight-saving time, whereas neighbouring U.S. states will return to standard time on 3 November. Without an adjustment, the one-hour time difference would confuse commercial carriers and same-day travellers who plan customs formalities to match opening hours on both sides of the border. The new timetable keeps each Canadian port’s public hours aligned with the U.S. port directly opposite it. For example, Carway (AB) will shift to 08:00–00:00 daily to mirror U.S. Customs at Piegan, Montana, while Aldergrove (BC) will operate 09:00–01:00, matching Lynden, Washington. Manitoba sees the largest number of changes, with 13 low-volume crossings adopting 9- or 10-hour days instead of the previous 12-hour pattern. Commercial service windows have also been retimed so that truck drivers can clear both borders without mandatory lay-overs. For businesses, the two-season approach means schedules will change again in mid-March 2027 when U.S. clocks spring forward. Logistics firms should update driver dispatch systems and notify just-in-time suppliers well in advance. Frequent travellers enrolled in NEXUS must also watch closing times: kiosks shut down when the traveller stream closes—even if commercial lanes remain open. The CBSA said the measure improves “joint operational readiness,” such as when one country denies entry and immediately returns the traveller to the other side. It also lowers overtime costs because officers’ shifts no longer straddle two different clock regimes. Travellers can expect signage at affected crossings in the week before 1 November and real-time updates in the ArriveCAN mobile app. From a global-mobility perspective, the change underscores how provincial policy experiments—in this case, permanent daylight time—can ripple into border operations. Employers with cross-border commuters or per-diem technicians should circulate the new schedules and consider flexible start times on 1 November to avoid inadvertent late arrivals.
