Felon Arrested After Attempt to Carry Weapon Into Canada Via Ambassador Bridge
US Customs and Border Protection confirmed late on 6 October that a commercial truck driver—already prohibited from possessing firearms—was arrested on 22 September after officers found a handgun and ammunition hidden in his rig at the Detroit plaza of the Ambassador Bridge. The case became public when regional media obtained the arrest affidavit and published details on 6 October. The driver was handed to Homeland Security Investigations and now faces multiple US federal charges. Had the weapon crossed the bridge undetected, the individual would also have been liable for prosecution under Canada’s Firearms Act, which imposes mandatory minimum sentences for undeclared weapons. The incident adds to a string of gun interceptions on the Windsor-Detroit corridor (see separate CBSA seizure report) and coincides with Canada’s expanded handgun freeze announced in 2025. CBSA intelligence officials say the policy has prompted some smugglers to attempt land-border concealment rather than standard declaration. For logistics firms, the arrest is a cautionary tale. Carriers are advised to audit driver compliance programmes and remind contractors that a single undeclared firearm can trigger loss of FAST commercial-driver certification, vehicle impound fees and supply-chain delays. With peak holiday shipping set to begin, both CBSA and CBP have indicated that joint enforcement operations will intensify through December.
