Bundestag opens heated debate on AfD motion calling for a “migration turnaround”
Germany’s Bundestag devoted its Friday morning sitting on 9 October 2026 to an AfD motion entitled “Measures for a genuine migration turnaround”. In a combative first reading, AfD MP Dr Gottfried Curio accused the governing coalition of pursuing a “pro-active immigration and naturalisation policy that is destroying the country” and demanded the removal of “two- to three-hundred-thousand illegal migrants every year”. The proposal seeks to make naturalisation purely discretionary after ten years’ residence, suspend almost all family-reunification visas, and strip protection status from Syrians. Speakers from the CDU/CSU welcomed the drop in asylum applications and claimed their party was delivering on promises of “order, control and limitation”. Coalition parties replied in equally sharp tones. Green MP Filiz Polat praised Germany’s “diversity as a strength”, while SPD member Hakan Demir dismissed the AfD’s ideas as “right-wing extremist deportation fantasies”. Die Linke argued that social class, not origin, was the real dividing line in society. Although the AfD holds only a minority of seats, its motion forces mainstream parties to lay out their own plans before next spring’s federal migration summit. Observers expect the Interior Committee to bury the text, yet the discussion highlights how border security, labour shortages and integration costs will shape Germany’s 2027 election campaign. Business-immigration advisors should prepare for tougher rhetoric and possible policy tweaks—especially around family reunion, Blue-Card thresholds and digital border technology—once committee consultations begin. For globally mobile employers, the debate signals continuing political pressure to tighten work-migration channels outside the skilled-worker track. Companies relying on third-country national talent may need to provide clearer economic arguments and stronger compliance documentation if future legislative proposals mirror parts of the AfD draft. Meanwhile, supportive voices in the coalition are likely to double down on programmes that speed up qualification recognition and language training, producing a two-track agenda of facilitation for talent and restriction for irregular migration.
