CBP surpasses 1 billion facial-biometric verifications at U.S. borders
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) quietly crossed a symbolic threshold this week, confirming that its Traveler Verification Service (TVS) has now matched more than one billion traveler faces at air, land and sea ports of entry. The agency began rolling out facial comparison in 2018 as part of a statutory mandate to create a biometric exit-entry system; the technology is now active on arrival at every U.S. airport accepting international flights, on departure at 66 airports, at 42 seaports, and at select pedestrian and vehicle lanes on both the northern and southern borders. CBP says the system has already flagged over 600,000 suspected overstayers and intercepted 2,300 impostors travelling on another person’s documents. Funding for the nationwide expansion—approximately $673 million—was provided under the 2025 “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which earmarked half of its collections for biometric modernisation. Photographs of U.S. citizens are deleted within 12 hours and participation remains voluntary for Americans, who can opt for a manual passport inspection instead. Foreign nationals, however, are required to submit to biometric capture as a condition of entry. For employers and global mobility managers the milestone underlines how quickly biometric border management has become the default. Airlines, cruise lines and even rental-car providers are increasingly expected to integrate with TVS Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to share passenger manifests in real time. Corporate travellers who have not updated their travel-profile consent settings may find themselves routed into slower, manual lanes if they seek to opt-out on arrival. Privacy advocates continue to raise concerns over data retention and algorithmic bias, but CBP emphasises that its algorithms show a 98 percent match-rate accuracy across diverse demographics and that the underlying gallery of more than 320 million unique identities is stored in DHS’s IDENT system—already used for fingerprints. Companies moving staff into the United States are therefore advised to brief travellers on what to expect at the camera kiosks and to ensure passports have unobstructed, high-resolution facial images to avoid false non-matches. Longer-term, the one-billion-scan landmark accelerates pressure on visa-overstay enforcement. CBP can now correlate exit data with USCIS and State-Department databases almost in real time, tightening the window in which employers must react if a foreign worker’s status lapses. Payroll, I-9 and petition tracking systems should therefore be audited to make sure they pick up “departure-verified” events that could start the unlawful-presence clock for assignees who inadvertently overstay.
