Sanya Phoenix Airport Re-links to Phnom Penh–Singapore Fifth-Freedom and Kuala Lumpur Routes
Hainan’s Sanya Phoenix International Airport reinstated two key Southeast Asian connections on 10 October, signalling renewed regional openness. Cambodia Air resumed its fifth-freedom “Phnom Penh – Sanya – Singapore” service, while Malaysia’s Batik Air relaunched nonstop Sanya–Kuala Lumpur flights. The twin reopenings expand Sanya’s international network to six foreign cities, restoring nearly 60 percent of its pre-pandemic seat capacity. The Cambodia Air flight operates three times weekly with Airbus A321 aircraft, offering same-plane service that lets Chinese leisure and business travellers reach Singapore without visa hassles in Cambodia and gives Cambodians a one-stop beach holiday. Batik Air’s Boeing 737 service will run four times per week, timed for afternoon departures that connect with evening Australia and ASEAN banks in Kuala Lumpur. Both airlines cite rising conference and incentive demand as Hainan’s duty-free policy and short-haul visa-exemption for ASEAN nationals bolster appeal. For multinational corporations the restored links cut door-to-door travel time from Southeast Asia’s finance hubs to China’s southern resort province by up to five hours compared with routing via Guangzhou or Hong Kong. Event planners staging product launches in Sanya’s fast-growing MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) market gain direct access to Singapore-based delegates, while exporters gain belly-hold capacity for tropical seafood and high-value perishables. The Hainan provincial government is targeting 50 international weekly flights by year-end and is negotiating additional frequencies with Thai Airways and Indonesia’s Garuda. Business mobility teams should note that foreign visitors can now leverage the province’s 30-day visa-free entry, provided they register accommodation within 24 hours and depart directly from Hainan. Airport authorities have also installed 18 new e-gates that recognise foreign e-passports and Chinese mainland travel permits, trimming arrival formalities to under two minutes. Companies sending staff to Sanya should ensure passport chips are readable and remind travellers to retain boarding passes, which are still required at customs for duty-free purchases over CNY 5,000.
